Beatrice (Bea) Smolens (nee Greenwald), 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday November 22, 2016in Medford, NJ. She was the wife of the late Martin Smolens and mother of Brian Smolens of Silver Spring, MD. A retired Clinical Psychologist at Ancora State Hospital, Bea spent the last 17 years at Medford Leas where she shared both active and intellectual pursuits with many friends. Born in Atlantic City, NJ she earned a BA in Psychology and Education at Temple University and a MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Between her two degrees she worked as an assistant psychologist in the Army Signal Corps. After marriage and the birth of her son, the family settled first in Westmont and later at Lake Pine in Marlton, NJ. In addition to being an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Cherry Hill. she began teaching history, global geography and French at Moorestown Friends School. Her career at Ancora followed, and her retirement in 1987 offered her a chance to expand her interests that included being a volunteer for Burlington County Family Service as a member of their Child Placement and Review Board, teacher of Memoir and Essay writing for a program called LIFE, self publisher of poems, musician playing the organ, an avid reader, player of games, and a world traveler going to 33 Elderhostels! A Memorial to celebrate Bea's long life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Cherry Hill in early April, 2017 when she would have celebrated her 96th birthday.
